Tips & Tricks

  • Try and find a place for everything in the camper, even if you are not a naturally organised family. This will avoid so much frustration later.

  • If budget permits, consider hiring a vehicle with one or two more berths than your number of people - you might appreciate that extra space.

  • Mix up freedom camping with holiday park plug-in stays. It’s nice to have the option of a TV room, pool table, shower and kitchen blocks every other night to give everyone some space.

  • Use the USB in the cab to charge devices while on the move — it means you can get the best use out of power sources. Power banks are also a good idea if you have multiple kids all ‘needing’ their phones.

  • Understand it can take a day or two for everyone to get into the groove of living together in a small space. It can be tight, but everyone gets used to it after the initial settling-in period.

  • Be organised with your storage, bring extra tupperware for storing food and snacks, be prepared by packing your luggage into soft bags instead of suitcases to optimise space.

  • Plan your itinerary but not too much!  Savour the freedom of mobility and take a few days extra to linger in the spots you most enjoy.

  • If you’re in a Holiday Park, see if you can be placed near other families. Movement inside a motorhome can be quite noisy so it’s great to be around others who understand it

  • Plan some one pot dishes or easy meals before you go, to avoid the frustration at cooking in a smaller space. An extra gas burner can be helpful too - the kids can sit outside and cook part of the meal themselves (peel and boil those potatoes maybe?)

  • Download the Campermate app to have access to all the best info

  • Get your kids to research the next destination on your trip while you’re on the road. It will get them invested and excited about where you’re stopping next. Google Maps is also great for avoiding ‘are we there yet?’ conversations.
