Epic destinations with something for everyone

A family road trip is one of the best, most affordable ways to explore together. Take a campervan trip at your own pace, giving everyone the freedom to pick and choose attractions and experiences along the way. Next time you’re planning a family getaway pick one of these fun-filled road trip destinations and fall in love with the ease of a campervan holiday.

1: Route 66, United States

Retro-themed diners along Route 66

Not a destination as such, but a crowd pleaser. Yes, Route 66 stretches for miles however we don’t recommend travelling the entire route (especially if the kids are young). Pick a portion of the trip that appeals to your family. There’s plenty to see and do along the way like museums, retro diners and colourful neon signs. It’s perfect for taking at your own pace, and there is plenty of roadside space to pull over if and when needed.

2: Great Ocean Road, Australia

Australia has it all, however, we recommend checking out the exciting city of Melbourne (start with Luna Park and Funfields Aquatic Park) and then cruise the Great Ocean Road from the comfort of your own motorhome rental. Pull over with ease whenever you need a rest and check out the gorgeous coastline this famous route follows. Kids will love exploring the many scenic beaches, or take one of the walks along the way where you may even see some unique wildlife.

3: Auckland, New Zealand

We’ve added the capital city Auckland because it’s truly perfect for exploring before potentially going further into New Zealand countryside. With dormant volcanic cones to climb for gorgeous city views, swan-filled parks like Western Springs and Mission Bay beach for fish & chips you’ll find plenty to do within the inner city. Once you’ve explored the urban centre, head west for iron-rich black sand beaches, or north towards cute townships like Matakana (don’t miss the weekend markets). You and the family will be spoilt for choice in this vibrant and diverse city.

4. Colorado, United States

Step out into the wilderness and be at one with nature

There is so much to see and do in and around Colorado that everyone can enjoy. Check out the nearby Pike National Forest for mountain biking, hot springs, canoeing and stargazing. Jellystone Park at Larkspur is perfect for camping and has lots of fun activities onsite for the kids.

5: Whistler, Canada

You’ll get a genuine Canadian adventure with plenty of walking/hiking trails through picturesque scenery, or ride the Peak 2 Peak Gondola before taking a guided bear tour. With plenty of campsite options, you’ll have plenty to see and do with the family in Whistler.

6: Dubrovnik, Croatia

There are some pretty cool things to do in this city - we know it’s popular, and everyone seems to go there to see Game of Thrones filming locations but sometimes you just need to go and see for yourself. Base yourself at Camping Solitudo and relax onsite, and don’t forget to check out the Dubrovnik Cable Car for jaw-dropping views.

8: Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a fun city to wander around with plenty to see and do

Start your trip in Barcelona and explore the city surrounds before following the coastline towards the beach town of Cadaques for more adventures. Try the first leg of this Barcelona round trip itinerary - you’ll see gorgeous ocean views with plenty of cool things to see and do tucked along the way.

9: Berlin, Germany

Berlin has to be one of the coolest places to take the family. This city has such a cool, relaxed and inclusive vibe to it. There’s plenty of tasty food, wide open spaces, city art, Legoland and the Natural Science Museum which will ensure the kids and adults are kept entertained.

10: Quebec City, Canada

Wander around Quebec City and soak up everything this charming city has to offer

Quebec City’s stunning sights will blow your mind and make you feel like you’re in distant fairytale land. Just glance over at the Chateâu de Frontenac and the buildings of the Old City and you’ll realise this place is perfect to experience with family. This is a very walkable or bike-friendly city, which means you can park your motorhome and all head out to explore at your own pace.

11: Tuscany, Italy

Horse rides through the Tuscan hills, charming Italian farmhouses and delicious food to suit all palates. We recommend the wine region of Chianti Hills for a great place to base yourselves. Beautiful, wide open spaces for the kids and you guessed it, incredible wine for the adults.

12: Muskoka Lakes, Canada

The pristine Muskoka Lakes is perfect for a summer escape. Take to the lakes by kayak, canoe, paddleboard or water skis for some recreational aquatic-based fun. Land-based activities include mountain biking trails or scenic walks through the surrounding woods. There are some great kid-friendly campsite options in the area like Butterfly Lake Resort where you can base yourselves.

Don’t forget to book in your motorhome early to make sure you lock in the perfect vehicle for your family holiday. And remember your road trip snacks to ensure everyone is kept fed and happy while on the road!

Exploring by motorhome is my favourite way to immerse myself in a different place/culture. My favourite so far? The Southern States of the USA - epic food, amazing people and the most beautiful scenery. I could go on about that trip forever!
