Want unforgettable travel memories? It’s time to visit Slovenia

Nestled in central Europe, you’ll find Slovenia, an undiscovered paradise. Visitors will quickly fall in love with its breathtaking natural treasures and fascinating culture. Let us introduce you to a growing motorhome-friendly destination and all the reasons why Slovenia needs to be at the top of your road trip bucket list.

Your Next Destination

The Slovenian government has dedicated significant resources to an ongoing project where they've created over 150 campervan rest stops. These stops range from places offering the basics like water and electricity, to fully-equipped camping sites and attractions. Visitors to Slovenia can find places to stop, park up and recharge throughout the country for a hassle-free motorhome road trip.

An Unexpected Revelation

You've seen the beautiful images of snow-capped mountain peaks and turquoise waters, so you’re probably aware that Slovenia won't disappoint you. The attractions are endless, so we've narrowed down a few incredible locations that you can't miss during your time here.

Lake Bled

There’s no way this impossibly beautiful lake wasn’t making the top of this list. Visiting the tiny central island is possible with a pletna, a traditional boat in the Bled area. Once you reach the middle, you’ll need to walk up ninety-nine steps to reach the island’s church. Don’t forget to ring the church’s bell as it’s considered good luck. Make the most of the scenery by staying in the area. Camping Bled qualifies as one of the best campsites in Slovenia, right on the shores of Lake Bled bordered by the forest. There’s a restaurant, bike hire and more facilities nearby. You’ll be reluctant to leave.

Postojna Cave

The Slovenian underground hides an extensive and intricate cave system. Among those, twenty-two caves are open to the public, and Postojna Cave is the most popular. A 90-minute guided tour takes visitors through caverns, halls, and passages carved out by the Pivka River.

Predjama Castle, located near Postojna Cave, is built into the side of a stone cliff face.

Triglav National Park

Named after the country's tallest mountain, this is the only national park in Slovenia. With beautiful views of mountains, hills, lakes and rivers, this park is a nature lover's paradise. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, swim, raft, fish, or relax. There's a nearby campsite called Camping Kamne which is an ideal starting point for climbing the Slovenian national symbol: Mt.Triglav. This small site is suitable for those looking to relax and get back to nature. Nearby you’ll find incredible hiking routes and villages to explore, and further out, the emerald green waters of Zelenci nature reserve.

Wander the lush green landscape of Zelenci, part of Triglav National Park.

Ljubljana Castle

Are you ready for the most beautiful views of Ljubljana? The sixteenth-century fairytale castle is accessible by foot or by taking a tram. At the top, the cafe and restaurant in the castle's courtyard are perfect for a rest. Enjoy a cup of coffee or taste the traditional food while taking in the views. Ljubljana Castle also hosts several permanent exhibitions and offers guided tours. Stay at the nearby Campervan Stop Ljubljana Pri Kovacu where you can park for free if you buy a three-course meal at the restaurant on site. The food is delicious, and the campervan stop is clean and peaceful.

Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica is a town in west Slovenia which borders with Italy, and it's the perfect first stop if you're roaming around this region. It’s one of the more rural places to discover in Slovenia, surrounded by the greenery of woods and parks. Pay a visit to the pretty Kromberk Castle where you can learn more about the history of the area. Then, cross the stone Solkan Bridge which spans the Soca River. If you’re feeling adventurous, try bungee jumping off the side to get even closer to those gorgeous turquoise waters.

Camping in Slovenia

As we mentioned earlier, you're never far from an overnight stop or campground in Slovenia. Here are a couple of extra motorhome stopover options worth noting down. Take your pick and start travelling!

Area Sosta Camper - Kostanjevica na Krki

Now that's a mouthful! A free rest stop located on the river Krka, so you're guaranteed a beautiful view when you wake up. You're within walking distance of a small town, so you can grab a bite to eat there or pick up any supplies. There are no toilets available, so a self-contained camper is handy if you’re planning on staying here. Keep in mind that this is a popular spot, so you need to get there early in the day to guarantee a park for the night!

The Krka River is a fantastic way to spend a day kayaking, fishing, or exploring the river bank.

Kamp Menina

Located near the river Savinja, this campsite is a real gem for fans of water sports or swimming. The campground is far from traffic and busy roads, ensuring a tranquil atmosphere. Kids will adore the nearby sports park and sports field, while parents may enjoy a trip to the campsite sauna or soothing massage! Savinja is famous for fly-fishing, so try catching your lunch or dinner.

Explore More

The beauty of taking a motorhome holiday in Europe is that you're a short ride from neighbouring countries. You can add other locations outside Slovenia to your motorhome trip. Visit the northeast of Italy, Venice, Istria in Croatia, Balaton or Budapest in Hungary. All these locations are within five hours drive from Slovenia. If you're thinking of heading over the border, remember to check with your motorhome supplier beforehand about taking your vehicle outside the borders.

Why not choose somewhere like Slovenia for an off the grid motorhome holiday? Take advantage of the ongoing campsite project. They're making it easy for campervan travellers to park up and explore. Plus, you're in Europe, which means you can venture to a neighbouring country if you desire. You'll come home with road trip memories that will last a lifetime.

Exploring by motorhome is my favourite way to immerse myself in a different place/culture. My favourite so far? The Southern States of the USA - epic food, amazing people and the most beautiful scenery. I could go on about that trip forever!
