Beat the crowds with these upcoming trendy locations

Some of the world’s most significant destinations are struggling with over-tourism. Venice, Dubrovnik and Machu Picchu have all recently imposed visitor caps or guidelines to combat overcrowding. We know these unique places will always hold an appeal for travellers, but there are more places just under the radar which are worth considering. We’ve picked some trending destinations to consider for 2020, as well as a few familiar destinations like Italy where you can gain a new perspective by exploring lesser-known locations.

Cambridge, England

Spend a relaxing afternoon in Cambridge punting along the Cam.

Abundant in history and attractions, Cambridge (less than two hours from London) is perfect for wandering around and exploring, especially by motorhome. A few reasons for Cambridge making the list include the fact that it’s easily navigable and is bustling with an energetic yet comfortable atmosphere. It’s one of England’s two great university cities, and Cambridge doesn’t wear its history lightly. As you explore this extraordinary city, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time from the medieval winding streets to the remarkable Gothic buildings. New eateries are popping up all over the place, and popular establishments like Parker’s Tavern and the heavenly Restaurant 22 are definitely worth visiting. Craft beer lovers will enjoy The Cambridge Blue for a cold and refreshing pint.

Go punting on the Cam, picnic on its riverbanks, cross King’s College Bridge or go angling. Don’t leave to tour wider Cambridgeshire without visiting Fitzbillies on Trumpington Street and feasting on one of their famous Chelsea Buns. When it comes to camping, you’ll find plenty of sites worth spending a night or two around Cambridge, including Cambridge Cherry Hinton Club Site which is excellent for families.

Etyek, Hungary

Over the last twenty years, Hungary has quietly been reclaiming its spot as one of Europe’s most famous wine producers. As of late, the unassuming small town of Etyek just outside the capital has emerged as a go-to destination for wine connoisseurs. Known as ‘the vineyards of Budapest’, Etyek has been gaining acclaim for its perfect environmental factors that all contribute to elegant Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wines. While still unknown among foreigners, Budapestians have been heading to the town’s restaurants and cellars in droves. Dine at Halmi Pince which serves wine in an enchanting country setting. Don’t miss the fruit and botanical syrups in exquisite flavours (blackberry, pine needle, acacia) that will leave you wanting more. One of the newer wineries in town, Anonym Pince, has a modern concrete and glass tasting room, completed in 2015, offering panoramic views of the countryside.

Don’t leave this small gastronomic destination off your itinerary if you’re a foodie or wanting a tranquil retreat. Budapest is only 28 kilometres (18 miles) away, and an ideal location to collect your motorhome rental before heading to Etjek.

Matera, Italy

Discover the UNESCO heritage status of Matera, Italy.

Matera is most famous for the white Sassi structures carved into its limestone hills, which earned the town a UNESCO stamp. After being awarded the ‘2019 European Capital of Culture’ award, the hype is only continuing with new hotels, events and restaurant openings. Don’t miss visiting the museum Casa Noha, where a multimedia exhibit showcases the cities history. Take a cooking class, whipping up traditional dishes using Materan staples like fresh cheese and the region’s crusty cone-shaped bread. Then, descend into the pristinely white, high-design caves of Enoteca Dai Tosi for Piatti and Rose, followed by an evening stroll to the hilltop town which is stunningly modern with its cute shops and grand churches. You’ll quickly fall in love with this romantic part of Italy.

Book a camping space at Area Camper, which is an excellent choice to base yourself for further exploration of Matera.

Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Roam the wild and rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands.

The Scottish Highlands are first and foremost a hikers paradise. The picturesque and rugged landscape has a unique beauty. From quiet fishing villages to medieval castles the highlands are the perfect relaxing holiday spot. Pay a visit to the central hub, Inverness, before venturing to the famed Loch Ness. If you’re into hiking or walking, camping, bird-watching, or just admiring outstanding wilderness scenery, then Scotland and its stunning highlands is the place to explore and get off the beaten track in 2020.

Ready to begin your journey? Each one of these unique destinations can offer so much to the motorhome traveller. From bustling English cities to quiet Italian villages, there is somewhere to suit everyone on this list. We recommend booking early, and planning your campervan itinerary now before the rest of the world catches on.

Exploring by motorhome is my favourite way to immerse myself in a different place/culture. My favourite so far? The Southern States of the USA - epic food, amazing people and the most beautiful scenery. I could go on about that trip forever!
