Exploring Milford Sound

Are you ready for adventure?

Marvel at the beauty of Milford Sound in your very own home on wheels. We recommend picking up a Queenstown motorhome rental as you can make the most of New Zealand’s adventure capital before the epic drive out to he Sound.

The Road Trip

It’s just under four hours to drive to Milford Sound so take your time and look at the scenic views along the way. Include the following stops if you can:

  • Te Anau (and the glow worm caves)

  • Eglinton Valley for epic photos

  • Hollyford Valley Lookout for incredible scenery and more amazing photo opportunities

Before you arrive at the fiord, consider booking yourself a few nights at Milford Sound Lodge. They offer campsites for motorhomes with beautifully scenic views and it’s a great location to base yourself. As you can imagine, this accommodation does get busy especially throughout summer. Book as early as you can to secure your space.

The Sound

Milford Sound is a beautiful fiord located on the West Coast of the South Island. Here are a few of our top experiences while visiting.

1: Milford Discovery Centre & Underwater Observatory

Sea lions basking in the sun at Milford Sound

Seals, fish and black coral OH MY! Milford Discovery Centre & Underwater Observatory is a fascinating place where you can see ten metres below the ocean surface and look out from New Zealand’s only floating underwater observatory. You’ll see rare black coral and other amazing sea creatures in the wild.

2: Milford Track

Dubbed by Rudyard Kipling as “The finest walk in the world” the Milford Track will take you through postcard views of alpine scenery and lush rainforest. This track is one of New Zealand’s finest walks and we couldn’t recommend it enough.

A few things to note:

  • This is a one-way track; start at the top of Lake Te Anau

  • Boat access is needed for both ends of the track

Another option for incorporating your motorhome is to have someone drop everyone off in Te Anau before driving the motorhome on to Milford Sound and meeting up with the group several days later.

3: Milford Cruise

Fully immerse yourself in the wonders of this incredible place with a relaxing cruise across the Sound. You’ll fall madly in love with the natural features like rising mountains on every side, dark blue waves and flowing waterfalls (depending on how much rain the region has seen). We love that there are a variety of ways to experience the fiord and a cruise right through it is one of the best!

4: Stargazing

The perks of being out in the wilderness are that you don’t have to fight with light pollution from cities to see the gorgeous starry night skies. The stars will put on a show, so rug up and step outside after dark to gaze up at the shining heavens.

5: Kayaking

Kayaking through Milford Sound is a must-do experience

Take yourself on a true adventure where you can get closer than ever to the grand Milford Sound. Glide through crystal clear waters and soak up the mountain surroundings from the comfort of your own kayak.

This is only a small taste of what’s on offer to visitors in Milford Sound. There’s something truly magical about this part of Fiordland which has plenty to offer motorhome travellers. Lock in your New Zealand campervan rental and start planning your journey to this gorgeous part of the South Island.

Exploring by motorhome is my favourite way to immerse myself in a different place/culture. My favourite so far? The Southern States of the USA - epic food, amazing people and the most beautiful scenery. I could go on about that trip forever!
