Time to get your adventure on

Spring is a great time to get on the road with the family. With the school holidays approaching it’s a good idea to start thinking about what you might like to do. A motorhome holiday is always a hit and it saves you having to book accommodation too. Here are some possible itineraries to inspire you (as things are changing so fast in the current environment, please monitor websites to check these attractions are all open at the time you want to book).

At the top of the country a five day round trip from Auckland to Kaitaia may tickle your family’s fancy. Pick up your motorhome from the City of Sails, then head towards the winterless north. Stopping at Dargaville, Kaitaia, Paihia and Whangarei, there are plenty of fun attractions and sights to keep young minds entertained. Explore New Zealand’s longest beaches, surf on sand dunes, say hi to glow worms and dolphins, visit a Kauri museum, soak in thermal resorts and maybe even go horse riding! All bases are covered on this adventure.

Waikato is also pretty accessible from an Auckland start and a five day return trip through the Waikato region means you can take in Hamilton, Waitomo caves, Raglan, Rotorua and Hobbiton. This itinerary will see you discovering ancient cave systems, amazing surf beaches, beautiful lakes, spurting geysers, hobbit homes and gorgeous kiwi rural views. There may even be a few lambs to spot amongst the spring flowers in the paddocks.

Christchurch is a great place to start a motorhome adventure and a trip round the Canterbury region can take you from sparkling sea to majestic mountains and back again. Make sure you stop in the port town of Lyttelton (don’t miss She Universe Cafe for a taste of their chocolate creations) gorgeous Akaroa, Arthur’s Pass National Park and of course all the delights in Christchurch itself - families should not miss Riverside market and the amazing Turanga library.

Of course, now is the time to hit up the spots that are normally bustling with tourists. Be blown away by the Remarkables in Queenstown and don’t miss Glenorchy, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Arrowtown and Wanaka. Adventure abounds in this part of the country with everything from skiing, hiking, hot pools, bungy jumping, panning for gold, wine tasting (okay maybe not for the kids, but you might need it) and jet boating. The whole family will come away from this trip inspired and refreshed by the mountain air and vibes.
