Aotearoa Easter Getaway

In New Zealand we were some of the luckiest people in the world; enjoying a beautiful summer with very few restrictions has been a luxury many others haven’t had. But now the weather is cooling down and those golden tans are fading a bit, it’s time to look ahead for the next opportunity for fun with family or friends. Lucky for us, Easter is just around the corner, four days of work free bliss - the perfect length of time for a mini break in a campervan. Here are some ideas of short trips you might want to consider if you’re in the North Island, or want to fly there for the long weekend.

North bound

Depart Auckland and head north. Waipu and Mangawhai are great beach stop options on the way, as is Whangarei. You can head towards Hokianga for pure untouched New Zealand (via the Kauri museum in Matakohe if you fancy) or take the other route to the Bay of Islands for history in Russell, and great beach times anywhere in the area.

Geothermal adventures

Check out the incredible world-class gardens in Hamilton (don’t miss the Surrealist one which everyone of every age loves) then pick up a motorhome and tour round Rotorua and Taupo for a few days before heading back. There’s so much to do in Rotorua - from Hobbiton to Zorbing, to checking out the geysers, to walking round the Blue Lakes and in Taupo you’ll love eating out, jet boating, exploring Huka Falls, soaking in geothermal hot pools, sailing on the lake and trout fishing.

Head to Food and Wine Country

If you’re Wellington based, why not hire a campervan and head to Hawke’s Bay (with a cheeky stop in Martinborough for some wine tasting on the way of course) Cruise round the vineyards - some of the oldest in the country - cycle the coastline, check out the farmers markets, wander round the art deco buildings of Napier, drop by the aquarium. It’s so easy to while away a few relaxing days in this picturesque part of the country.

So get thinking, and get booking that motorhome holiday. Early April is a beautiful time to travel and see some of the best of our country. Summer holidays may be over, but that doesn’t mean opportunities for fun have disappeared. And if you’ve never been in a campervan before, Easter is the perfect time to trial a short break before doing a longer one later in the year.

There's nothing better than a road trip. While I love flying to different cities you never get the same experience as you do when you're driving. That fruit stall with the huge red strawberries, the local gallery you never knew existed, the deserted white-sand beach you only saw because the man at the cafe told you it's just down the road. Wheels give you freedom to discover and explore and be absorbed by all the treasures a region has to offer.
