Celebrate Australia Day the Best Way!

It’s Australia day on the 26 January and the long weekend opportunity means the perfect excuse for a motorhome holiday. If you’re out and about enjoying the gorgeous summer weather on this public holiday, here are some great Australia Day celebrations from around the country you could slot into your schedule to have even more fun on your holiday.

Sydney

Australia Day is a good time to reflect on how our First Nations people are the foundation of Australia’s story and are the world’s oldest living culture. The WugulOra event on the 26th incorporates music, dance, language and ceremony to honour the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. The Smoking Ceremony flame will burn through the night on Me-Mel (Goat Island), before travelling to Barangaroo on Australia Day. Performances and celebrations will include the Koomurri Aboriginal Dancers and other groups. This is a great way to start a day, followed by exploring the city then concluding your day by watching the festivities around the Sydney Opera House. There will be live musical performances as yachts, jet-skis and fly boarders synchronise with the music and fireworks.

Adelaide

Celebrations in Adelaide will also begin with a smoking ceremony - at 8am in Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla. There will be songs from  Singer Glenn Skuthorpe, truth telling by Rosemary Wanganeen, and traditional dance from Port Augusta’s Dusty Feet Mob. The fabulous Adelaide Central markets (a must visit for anyone motorhoming in this area to stock up on South Australia’s finest) will have an event as well, with live cooking demonstrations by Rosa Matto and Kevin Kropinyeri, art installation and workshops art, another smoking ceremony and lots of BBQ inspiration. Rundle Mall is the heart of shopping, mooching and gathering in Adelaide and from 11am-2pm there will be live music, storytelling and participatory art to celebrate Australia Day.

Perth

Perth is going all out with a five day celebration so it would be a great place to include on your campervan journey anytime from 22 to 26 January. There is everything from Twilight Markets to Moonlight Cinema, to Aboriginal dance performances, to a water projection showcase of the story of the Whadjuk Nyoongar people, to family concerts to a big Aussie BBQ. It's an amazing lineup of events and activities, so definitely schedule it into your itinerary if your travels take you to this area this month.

There's nothing better than a road trip. While I love flying to different cities you never get the same experience as you do when you're driving. That fruit stall with the huge red strawberries, the local gallery you never knew existed, the deserted white-sand beach you only saw because the man at the cafe told you it's just down the road. Wheels give you freedom to discover and explore and be absorbed by all the treasures a region has to offer.
