5 Destinations for Intrepid Motorhome Explorers

Everyone knows that one person who takes travel to the next level. The one who isn’t content with the Eiffel Towers and Big Bens of the world, the one who has to renew their passport not because it’s expired, but because it has run out of pages. If that intrepid friend is you, this collection of obscure destinations may be next on your travel list - and if that intrepid friend isn’t you, why not break out of your comfort zone and try something a little different?

Here are five obscure destinations you can explore with a motorhome rental. Find out exactly what makes them so worthwhile.

Latvia

Pick up a Latvia motorhome rental in the beautiful city of Riga

From miles of beaches and medieval castles to art nouveau architecture and unforgettable food, there’s a lot to love - and be surprised by - in Latvia. Pick up your campervan in Riga and drive just 30 minutes to Jurmala, a gorgeous seaside resort where you can relax on the sand or book in for a mud pack or massage. Then head to the Rundale Palace, nicknamed the Baltic Versailles, to explore its spectacular rose garden, enlightening museum, and meticulously designed architecture.

Mozambique

Find paradise in Tofo with a Mozambique motorhome rental

Mozambique is not a name often heard amongst travel bucket lists, but that simply means you’ll have the idyllic beaches and culturally vibrant towns more to yourself. You’ll begin in the south with an RV rental from Maputo, the country’s capital. From here, you’ll hug the coastline as you head north, hopping from one beach town to another to taste fresh seafood and enjoy sandy shores without tourists in every direction. Tofo is a favourite destination, especially as you may encounter whale sharks, manta rays, and perhaps even dugongs in the area. You’ll need to be up to date with your shots and malaria tablets, and hide valuables such as cameras and jewellery to be on the safe side; but with a few precautions, many travellers find Mozambique to be a new favourite place in the world.

Poland

Pick up your Poland motorhome rental in Warsaw

While Poland isn’t exactly unpopular, it also doesn’t shine quite as bright in the eyes of travellers as other nearby destinations - but it should! You’ll be entranced by the immense tapestry of the past found across Poland, with over a thousand years of castles, invasions, and heroic kings, followed by a powerful Jewish heritage that you can explore through memorials and synagogues. The Warsaw reconstructed old town is a special must-see, as is the fairytale-like market square and township of Wroclaw to the west. You can get off the beaten track and drive to the eastern border to discover the lush Bialowieza Forest, or stick to the bright and charming facades of Long Lane by the coast in Gdansk. As a relatively small country, it’s easy to see it all without spending long days on the road to get anywhere!

Malawi

Just its name sings of foreign far away places. Malawi is a land-locked and surprisingly small country in Africa’s southeast, well-known for its massive Lake Malawi, and for being the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ due to the friendliness of the locals. Even though it’s not known as a wildlife destination, you will find the Big Five (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) in the Majete Wildlife Reserve, and even though it’s not on the coast, you’ll still find beach resorts, diving, and boating on the lake. You’ll pick up a motorhome in Lilongwe, and can either drive to the northern or southern end of the country within a day.

Estonia

Start your Estonia motorhome journey in Tallinn, the capital city.

A small country tucked into the corner of Eastern Europe, Estonia is a country that has experienced the rule of a range of other powers, and has the architecture, culture, and tales to prove it. You’ll begin exploring in Tallinn, the country’s capital and the home of a medieval old town that was originally built in the Late Middle Ages by the German crusaders, and is now considered to be one of the best preserved medieval old towns in Europe. From here you can visit the beaches along the coastline - although they’re known more for their beauty than their warmth - or make your way south to the Ruunaraipe Sand Dunes, formed roughly 10,000 years ago. Estonia is small enough to drive around in a day or two, but you’ll need much longer than that to see what it truly has to offer.
