Explore everything the Waikato has to offer

Commonly known for the movie sets of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, the Waikato is packed with adventures. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a film fanatic, trying to embrace the surfer lifestyle or someone who just likes nature - there’s something for everyone here.

If you’re an avid surfer, Raglan will be high on your list. With arguably the world’s longest left-hand break, you’ll be coasting for up to 2 kilometres. Tolkien fans can head east toward Matamata and visit the surrounding areas - made famous for their part in the award winning films.

Head underground to the Waitomo Caves for an adrenaline adventure and, for those with a fainter heart, find a range of treks and trails perfect for walking, hiking and cycling.

Hamilton

Take a scenic riverside walk (or boat cruise) along the Waikato River or wander through the central precinct and stop by one of the many popular cafes, bars and restaurants.

Looking for an educational experience? Pop over to Waikato Museum for a rich history lesson or walk-through the free flight aviary at Hamilton Zoo.

Raglan

Find yourself on the West Coast of the Waikato in this creative little town where a raging surf and a cup of coffee are the perfect mix. Ride a continuous wave for two kilometres or if you’re not feeling entirely confident, the Raglan Surf School offers lessons.

For those that feel more comfortable on solid ground you can climb to the top of Bridal Veil Falls - or for those craving adventure - to the top of Mount Karioi. Explore local heritage along the Te Toto Gorge Track, or if you’ve got your bike, take to the Pipiwharauroa Trail or Te Ara Kakariki, the local mountain bike track.

Karapiro

If you’re looking for your next high-octane adventure, look no further than Lake Karapiro, offering stand-up paddle-boarding, family kayaking and jet boating.

Once you’re off the water, we recommend you take to the mountain tracks nearby including the internationally renowned Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari and climb the 16 metre viewing tower. Don’t mind the dark? Try the glow worm kayak tours!

Matamata

Made world-famous by The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, Matamata is a must-visit if you’re passing by. Explore over 40 hobbit holes and learn about how the set was created.

Not quite your cup of tea? Try the Wairere Falls - at 153m high, it’s the highest waterfall in the North Island. Head along the accompanying track to the lookout for views across the valley and Waikato Plains.

Waitomo Caves

With so many ways to see the Waitomo Caves, it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular attraction. Riddled with caves, underground rivers and sinkholes, the walking and boat tours are a great starting point. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try Black Water Rafting, zip-lining or abseiling - the adrenaline doesn’t stop.

For a calmer excursion, visit the cafes and Waitomo Museum of Caves. The local Mangapohue Natural bridge or Marokopa Falls also make for a great natural adventure.

Putaruru

Enjoy the outdoors and trout fishing in Putaruru.

Near Lake Arapuni, you’ll find Putuaru. This small rural town is a paradise for those who enjoy fishing and it offers a range of rivers bountiful with trout.

Grab your walking shoes and head along the Te Waihou Walkway to Blue Springs. The pure water from the springs is almost completely clear and has a distinct blue hue. Nearby the Arapuni Swing Bridge is also something you might want to check out.
