How to have a cosy winter motorhome holiday

Have you always associated campervan holidays with summertime, beaches and long days in the sun? While that’s certainly an amazing experience, Motorhomes are also very cool for winter - exploring our mountainous and snow covered areas on this type of holiday can be truly magical. Think snuggly blankets, snow falling outside, hearty soups and wrapping your hands around steaming mugs of hot chocolate. Here’s our guide to motorhome holidays in the snow.

Keeping snuggly

The first thing everyone thinks of is warmth on a winter holiday - and you’ll be pleased to know, most modern campervans have built-in heaters that can run all night if you’re plugged in. There’s nothing better than being snuggled up in a toasty camper when it’s cold outside.

Cost

One major advantage of renting a campervan in winter is that it will cost you less. The demand is, of course, less than in peak season over the Christmas holidays and your choice of models will be much more than in the summer months.

Campgrounds

Winter brings a lot of advantages when it comes to campsites and holiday parks. They are far less crowded, so there are no queues for the facilities; you don’t have to book ahead so can be a bit freer with your travel plans; and you can usually get a powered site really close to the shower and toilet block - perfect for chilly mornings. If you’re splashing out, definitely book a higher end holiday park with spa or heated pool facilities. Perfect for winter relaxation.

Scenery

Mountains are lovely in summer but it’s hard to beat snow capped peaks. There are many campsites with views that will take your breath away every time you open those curtains in the morning. There’s something so magical about staying in the shadow or a mountain or a range.

Tips for great winter motorhome holiday

  • It’s entirely possible to drive campervans in snowy areas. You just get chains like for any other vehicle and don’t try and break any land speed records.
  • If you feel the cold, bring a sleeping bag, thermal socks and a wheat bag or hot water bottle to keep you extra toasty.
  • Check beforehand whether your motorhome has a heater, and take a portable one if it doesn’t. It doesn’t take too much time to heat up a compact space.
  • Take lots of coins for showers and laundry if you need it. You want to be able to have a hot shower when you need it, not be scratching around for change.
