Great US Winter Motorhome Destinations

Many people associate motorhome trips with summer, but there are plenty of good reasons to hire one in winter too. There are some great deals around, RV parks are less crowded, and you get to see well-known sights in a totally different light. Some of our most beautiful destinations look almost like a totally new place in soft winter light or with a gentle dusting of snow. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking about winter getaways.

Yellowstone National Park
While there are still a few minor restrictions on the Idaho part (no quarantine required), there are no restrictions in Montana and Wyoming so you can visit most parts of this world famous geothermal wonder with no worries. The wild colours and erupting geysers will make you feel like you’re on another planet and this seems even more vivid with a backdrop of pristine white snow. You can even take a  snowshoeing tour where rangers will help you spot elk, bison and maybe even wolf pups.

Sault Ste. Marie (US Side)
For those who embrace the cold rather than try to escape it, Sault Ste in the extreme northern portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the Canadian border, is a must visit. Marie is a picture perfect with its frozen waterfalls and ice-covered lakes and a few hours on are the Eben Ice Caves. These form at a certain time of year when melting snow runs over the edge of a small cliff and freezes. Take cleats or snowshoes to make it easier to access the caves.

Zion National Park
Zion National Park in Utah is just as impressive in winter as summer, and while not all RV parks will be open, some are definitely available all year round. Sure you’ll have to wear a few more layers but none of that is going to matter when you clap eyes on those towering cliffs of apricot and red that soar into a seemingly endless blue sky - even more impressive with a sprinkling of snow on top. Take advantage of the lack of usual crowds to check out this one of the ‘big five’ of Utah.

With things changing rapidly it’s best to check which RV parks are open at the time of travel. Some have fire rings so you can spend nights rugged up in your camping chairs enjoying the clear night skies. Now that’s much better than sitting at home running out of Netflix options isn’t it?
