Easter around the world: the five best spots for a motorhome getaway

Easter road trips

Easter comes early this year - the beloved four-day weekend will begin on Friday the 25th of March. That means it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll spend the precious time off. Why not go all out and plan a road trip adventure? Pick up a motorhome rental and you could make this Easter one to remember no matter where you are around the globe.

These are our top five Easter road trip destinations - but let your imagination run wild. We can find you a motorhome rental for any road trip plans!

1 . Springtime on the East Coast of the US

Did you know that you can see cherry blossoms in Washington DC as well as Japan? In fact, the city hosts a National Cherry Blossom festival each year to celebrate - and with peak bloom dates generally falling around late March or early April, Easter is the perfect time to visit and see the city and region at its springtime best. The festival takes place from March 20th to April 17th in 2016, with a range of events in various venues including amongst the cherry trees around Washington’s Tidal Basin.

Pick up a Washington RV rental, get your fill of the gorgeous blossoms and then hit the road to explore the area. With four days you could easily visit Baltimore and then head out to the coast of Delaware. The lovely long sandy beaches there are much less crowded at this time of year, so you can enjoy a relaxed getaway. Alternatively, go south from Washington and into Virginia, where you’ll find the charming southern city of Richmond and the buzzing Virginia Beach.

2 . Spanish sun

The Andalusia region of Spain, encompassing the most southern reaches of the country, is an extremely sunny place - only a few days each year are without some sunshine. This makes it a great European destination at Easter time when the more northerly nations are starting to cool down.

Book a campervan rental in Malaga, Sevilla, or Cadiz and your options for a four-day adventure are endless. Highlights of the area include the many beautiful Mediterranean beaches, the laid-back atmosphere replete with siestas and fiestas, and the rich history and culture of Spain. Add to your itinerary the stunning Alhambra Palace in Granada, the amazing cathedral in Sevilla, the Puente Nuevo Bridge, the Mezquita cathedral-within-a-mosque in Cordoba, the Doñana National Park and more from the region’s huge list of attractions.

3 . Chase the summer in New Zealand

With Easter falling so early in the year, you could catch the remnants of New Zealand’s idyllic summer days with a road trip from Auckland. The northland region is traditionally amongst the warmest in the country, and is an excellent choice for a laid-back four-day trip, especially in a campervan which allows you to stay in basic campgrounds and holiday parks.

Pick up an Auckland campervan hire and hit State Highway One heading north. Four days will give you plenty of time to visit the best parts of Northland - and there are many. Alongside the well-known highlights such as 90-mile Beach, Cape Reinga, the Bay of Islands and the iconic Tane Mahuta Kauri tree are the local legends: The fish-and-chip shop at Mangonui,  snorkelling at Goat Island, surfing at Baylys Beach, and the monster sand dunes across the harbour from Opononi. Pick your own path, and don’t be shy about stopping to ask for suggestions along the way!

4 . Spring skiing in British Columbia

Late season snow at Whistler makes it a fantastic place to be for Easter weekend - and you can combine a day of skiing with a road trip around Vancouver and the British Columbia Coast. Just pick up a Vancouver RV rental and start wandering!

Whistler is one of the world’s favourite ski resorts, less than 2 hours’ drive from Vancouver along the magnificent Sea-to-Sky Highway.  The town is a great place to visit at any time of the year, but spring means wonderful skiing conditions, with the sun often out to provide bluebird days. Imagine an après ski session in the sun on a Saturday evening!

You can also include the urban attractions of Vancouver in your trip: the Aquarium, Stanley Park, the view from Grouse Mountain. There are also plenty of lovely coastlines to drive in the area, as well as a vehicle ferry to get you across to the natural beauty of Vancouver Island.

5 . See the tulips in Amsterdam

One of the greatest things about the spring season is seeing the flowers begin to bloom - and the tulips of the Netherlands are some of the most stunning. Although Easter this year is quite early, you are still likely to see early tulips and plenty of daffodils at the end of March, as well as getting in a fabulous road trip in the neat and orderly Netherlands.

The most famous flower-viewing area is right near Amsterdam, centred around Leiden and the gorgeous Keukenhof Park which opens in late March. Pick up your motorhome rental in Amsterdam or Rotterdam and hit the road with an eye on the fields for flashes of that beautiful colour. You can also visit a trio of wonderful Dutch cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague, enjoy the beaches on the North Sea coast and perhaps take a detour into Belgium for some waffles.

Those are just a few ideas for easy Easter road trips in various parts of the world - what would be your ideal 4-day motorhome journey?

I love travelling, and a motorhome is such a great way to get around and get up close and personal with a new country or city. My top motorhome memory is driving a small sleepervan through the highlands of Scotland- a stunning nation and one of my favourite spots on earth! I hope to help you plan your next road trip with handy tips and information. Happy motoring!
