Burning Man festival – A week like no other

Dedicated to the spirit of community, art, self-expression and self-reliance, the week-long Burning Man Festival in Nevada is a truly life-changing experience.

The 400 sq mile expanse of the Black Rock Desert is ideal for a motorhome adventure, as a city forms literally out of nothing – then disappears again, leaving no trace. But from the last Monday of August, for seven days, a true celebration of the human spirit ensues, the like of which you simply cannot comprehend and have to experience for yourself.

This isn’t a Glastonbury-type event, with high-profile musical talent performing for the masses. No… the entertainment is self-generated by those attending. And there are 10 key principles the festival adheres to: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-Reliance, Radical Self-Expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation and Immediacy. You need to possess an open mind and be ready for anything.

The symbol of the burning man dates back to 1986, where on Baker Beach in San Francisco Larry Harvey and Jerry James constructed a burning effigy. It has been called the first modern example of “radical self-expression”. Within five years the annual ritual had gone from an audience of 20 to 800 people. A new cultural movement was gradually emerging.

In 2013 that figure had risen to over 68,000 attendees - all there to enjoy art installations, mutant cars, sculptures, fireworks, dance, music and so much more. A spiritual celebration, in the most arresting of environments. Let’s face it - there’s nothing like watching a sunset in the desert.

And the camping is perfectly set up for motorhome travel. Prices range from $25 a night upwards – and self-containment is an essential in such a vast dust-bowl of nothingness. There’s a wonderful sense of community – but be prepared. And don’t expect a Starbucks for your morning latte! Tickets are also highly sought-after, so plan well in advance and get your transport booked.

It’s basically an opportunity to escape from the mundane functionality of modern life and disappear into a vortex of vitality, life, laughter and expression. Who wouldn’t want to do that…?

An RV Rental from Las Vegas or a San Francisco RV Rental are great options for your Burning Man RV Rental roadtrip - head over to your location of choice and get booking now.

A journalist and editor for nearly two decades, I am originally from London but proudly call New Zealand home. Having travelled the South Island in a campervan, I know exactly how liberating motorhomes and campers can be. It’s a great opportunity to be part of Motorhome Republic, as we look to educate and encourage people to hit the road in what is, essentially, a portable hotel! I will be creating interesting industry articles, travel itineraries, road-trip ideas, movies and so much more. Come along for the ride!
