Eating and Drinking in Tampa

An inviting area for nightlife and dining is Tampa’s Soho District. (Short for South of Howard Avenue) Here you will find Bern’s Steakhouse, a Tampa institution since 1956. Aged steaks are selected by diners based on weight and thickness, then charcoal-grilled. The accompanying vegetables are mostly grown on Bern’s farm.

Nearby is the Copper Fish Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar. Here they specialise in very fresh seafood prepared over a hardwood grill. The restaurant has a large outdoor seating area complete with a fountain. A popular dish here is Black Grouper served over a bed of grits.

Finish the night with a drink at McDinton’s Irish Pub, another Soho mainstay.

Things to do: Tampa Beach Vacation and beyond

When you have had enough of the beach, there are lots of other things to do in Tampa. Busch Gardens is a fun park with roller-coasters, animal encounters and live shows.

Big Cat Rescue is one of America’s largest accredited wildlife sanctuaries. It has over 100 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars and servals in their 67-acre park. They run various tours throughout the day and bookings are essential.

The beautifully restored Tampa Theatre was built in 1926, and has been named, ‘One of the most spectacular theatres in the world’. It shows classic and independent movies and hosts live shows. It still has a classic Wurlitzer organ to add to the atmosphere. Look for seasonally themed events during your visit.

Historic Ybor City was founded by cigar manufacturers in the 1880s, and was home to Spanish, Cuban and Italian immigrants. For 50 years, thousands of cigars were rolled in this district. The city, just north-east of Downtown Tampa is completely rejeuvenated, and its main street, 7th Avenue, voted one of the 10 best streets in America.

Florida Road-trips from Tampa

Tampa has its own international airport, six miles from downtown, which is in the process of a major renovation. It is one of only two US airports with regular charter flights to Cuban cities. From Tampa Airport, you can fly from/to numerous cities including Dallas, Las Vegas and New York.

From Tampa, a great road trip is to visit the hidden gem of Jacksonville. Around 225 miles away, it has a less crowded beach scene and vibrant downtown area. It even has an NFL team. On your drive, by taking a 15-minute detour via highways 1-4E and 1-95, you can put in a side-trip to Orlando. Miami and the Everglades National Park, to the South is another great destination worth discovering.

Driving tips in Tampa

Florida is subject to some extreme weather, with particularly high winds in the hurricane season. Be cautious in your RV during strong winds, as the high profile of the camper will make it more affected. Never drive through flood waters, it may be that the road is washed out under the water. If in doubt, stay put.
