RV Rentals Skagway – a glorious American road trip

Skagway was the centre of the Klondike Gold Rush, and has preserved much of its town in the style of the times. It is also a huge tourist port, with over 450 cruise ships docking in Skagway each season, dispersing around 750,000 visitors into the town. A camper rental in Skagway will allow you to explore independently, away from the crowds.

Explore Skagway and Beyond on a Classic Alaskan Road-trip

Skagway is part of the classic Golden Circle Yukon Drive, which take inboth the USA and Canada. You can fly into Skagway, with its small regional airport to start the journey. You’ll drive through moon-crater like landscapes to Carcross, across the Canadian Border. Whitehorse is the next main town, and is the territory’s capital. From Whitehorse to Haines Junction, and onto Haines itself, you are following the original ‘grease-trail’ of the first nation people who traded in fish oil. A real motorhome rental adventure. Haines is connected to Skagway by a ferry service and you’ll arrive in the port just as the 98 Stampeders did, faced with cold, forbidding mountains.

Park your camper - where to stay in Skagway

Skagway RV and Camping Parks have two locations but are part of the same operation. Pullen Park is next to the Alaska State Ferry Dock, and Pullen Creek Park is a few minutes away from Downtown and the National Historic Park.

Eating, Drinking and Nightlife in Skagway

A fun night out and a glimpse of life in the lawless town of Skagway in the Gold Rush, is to attend the show, ‘Days of 98 with Soapy Smith’. This play has been running nightly for 60 years, bringing to life notorious criminal Jefferson ‘Soapy’ Smith.

The Red Onion Saloon and Brothel Museum is a bar and restaurant downstairs, and a recreation of the bordello as it was in 1898. The restaurant has managed to avoid being a tourist trap, and is frequented by locals and visitors alike. Upstairs, the 10 tiny rooms, or cribs, are lavishly decorated as they were when the Red Onion was the classiest brothel in town.

What to see and do in Skagway

The place to start is Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Call into the visitor centre in the restored 1898 Rail Depot, and get a free ticket to the Ranger-led walking tour of the historic district of Skagway.

The White Pass and Yukon Route train is a feat of engineering built for the stampeders in great haste in 1898. It took tens of thousands of men and 450 tonnes of explosive to blast this route. Today, the most popular excursion is to the White Pass Summit, where the train climbs over 3000 feet in 20 miles. Visit the excellent Trail of 98 Museum, for gold mining artefacts and history.

It means leaving the camper rental for a few days, but thousands of visitors come to Skagway each summer to walk the Chilcott Trail. This three- to five-day hike involves walking over the Chilcott Pass to Lake Bennett, through stunning countryside.

Staying Safe, driving tips for Alaska

Keep an eye on the weather forecast in Skagway, and the rest of Alaska. Most tourism activities are centred through the summer and autumn months, when conditions are more predictable, but some high elevations experience snow all year around. You can go a fair distance between towns and available facilities, so always drive from the top half of your petrol tank.
