Things to do in El Monte
El Monte is at the end of the historic Santa Fe Trail, an old Spanish trading route that linked Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Kansas in Missouri. This is a great idea for a US road trip. In the end, the trail swung out west, ending in El Monte, then part of the Los Angeles Pueblo. In those old days, El Monte had a reputation as a town where disputes were settled by a gunfight. Today you can get your shooting fun at Triple B Clays Shotgun Sports Park.
A nearby town, around a 20-minute drive into the San Gabriel Valley, is Pasadena. This is famous for the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl Parade on New Year’s Day each year. The Tournament is between top college football teams. The parade is quite a spectacle, hundreds of floats decorated with flowers into the theme of the year. Horses often feature, such as a group of riders with their unusual Norwegian Fjord Ponies.
California Dreaming – road trips from El Monte
There are three airports within 40 minutes of El Monte. Overseas arrivals will most likely fly into LAX, 32 miles away. There is also LA/Ontario International Airport, and a smaller field at Santa Ana. El Monte RV rentals is a large RV company with a depot in the town, who say that their largest volume of rentals is for the week of the Burning Man Festival, late August into early September. The festival is a celebration of art, radical self-expression and radical self-reliance, held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Camping is where the self-reliance comes in, visitors need to be responsible for all their own requirements as there are no stores. It is substantially cheaper to hire your van from El Monte to start this epic Burning Man road trip, than to pick up a van in Reno, closer to the festival.
Driving in El Monte – handy tips
You know what they say, it never rains in California, it pours. There is truth to this. Over summer, and particularly inland in the San Gabriel Valley, summer temperatures are extreme. It pays to check weather forecasts and keep well stocked with water. When it does rain (very likely through January and February) it can be a deluge, causing landslides and treacherous road conditions. Be especially careful of following distances on freeways.
