Edmonton Motorhome Rental

Welcome to Edmonton, a capital city built on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River and the ideal location to begin your Canadian motorhome tour

Hiring a motorhome in Edmonton

There are just under a million people living in Alberta’s capital city Edmonton. It’s in a relatively central location of the state, making it a great place to begin either a short motorhome holiday of just a few days, or a full tour of Alberta and surrounding areas throughout a whole month or more. Motorhome Republic helps you find the right campervan or RV for the job by bringing together vehicle options from leading brands Real Value RV and Canadream, so you can easily compare sizes, styles and prices for your vacation.

What to do with your motorhome rental from Edmonton

Snow lovers will be in paradise with some of the world’s best ski fields at their fingertips. Lake Louise is 4.5 hours southwest of Edmonton and offers 4,200 acres of skiable terrain. If there are those in your traveling party who aren’t into snow sports, bring them up the mountain for a ride on the gondola and unbeatable views of the lake and the Victoria Glacier.

The Icefields Parkway is a scenic route 3.5 hours from Edmonton that’s an attraction in itself. It’s 230 kilometres long and offers stunning scenery of rugged mountains, ice-blue lakes and rich forests.

Just under 5 hours from Edmonton is another chilly piece of scenery, the Columbia Icefield on the Athabasca Glacier. The most special part of this spot is a glass-bottomed Skywalk 300 meters above the Sunwapta Valley that curves out from the rockface for astonishing views.

Hoodoos are tall spires of rock that protrude up from the ground, making for fascinating formations. You can see them at the Hoodoo’s Trail hiking track just outside of Banff, or just out of Drumheller, both of which are 3-4 hours from Edmonton.

Another attraction to the west of Edmonton is the Whistlers Tramway, which is also known as the Jasper Skytram. You board the tram at an elevation of 1,304 meters, and disembark at 2,277 meters for an phenomenal view of the Rockies.

Best times of year to hire a campervan in Edmonton

Edmonton spends about a third of the year with at least some snow on the ground, so it can get quite chilly through winter and the months on either side. The average daily temperature in December, January and February is below freezing, and can get down to as low as -19 degrees Celsius on the coldest days, with as much as 20 cm of snow on the ground.

March and April can still be quite cool with some snow on the ground, but you start to see some fantastic weather from May to August with daily average temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius. You can experience some rain at this time of year however, so pack appropriately.

It cools down rapidly between September and November, often dropping below freezing with occasional snow.

Take a road trip into the Rockies

Elk Island National Park of Canada is a mere 20 minutes from Edmonton and makes a wonderful day trip in your campervan rental. Wood bison, elk, moose and over 250 species of birds are easy to spot. It’s open year-round, and you can also hike, canoe, kayak, sail, cross-country ski, golf, camp and more.

Four hours west of Edmonton tower the Canadian Rockies. Explore the beauty of the glaciers, canyons and turquoise lakes. Year round there are plenty of activites and outdoor adventures. You can hike or horseback across extended trails. When the snow falls, skiing, boarding, dog sledding, snowshoeing and ice climbing are all available. You can even take a dip in the outdoor natural hot springs between alpine panoramas.

Banff National Park is approximately five hours from Edmonton and attracts swarms of tourists to its mountains, lakes and shopping districts all year round.Edmonton has easier access to Jasper, the less-developed, less-commercial national park. It’s more than just food – Edmonton restaurants

Downtown you’ll find Lux Steakhouse, often heralded as delivering the best steak in the city. The atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from a downtown steakhouse; modern, cosmopolitan, elegant, with exquisite service. Matahari is a Thai/Malay fusion house with sumptuous food. The service is excellent and the prices extremely reasonable. Plus there’s a good selection of vegetarian dishes on the menu.

Corso 32 is an intimate restaurant located in the heart of downtown Edmonton, with a cosy ambience offering a very personal experience. Edmonton also has some excellent Italian food across the city. Your best bet is to head Downtown or Little Italy for the more authentic restaurants. Chianti’s, Sicilian Kitchen, Sorrentino’s, Fiore Cantina, and Tony’s Pizza offer some of the best pasta in the city, with hearty portions. Edmonton is also the birthplace of Boston Pizza – a chain of pizzerias across Canada and home to Earl’s.

In Chinatown you’ll find plenty of cheap eats from a variety of cultures. Whyte Ave has a vast selection of restaurants and dining places, too.

Malls and mountains: What to do in Edmonton

West Edmonton Mall is one of Edmonton’s most iconic attractions. It’s hard to miss as it’s the largest mall in the continent. Over 800 shops fill the suburban mega-shopping and entertainment centre and it is even classified as a zoo. The cultural centre of Edmonton focuses around the Citadel Theatre, host to major live theatre performances for over 40 years. There’s also a new concert hall, The Francis Winspear Centre for Music, that has excellent acoustics. For some edgy, funky shopping, head down Whyte Avenue. It’s Edmonton’s main retail district and worth a look. Stroll through bookstores, clothing shops and little gift shops as you people watch.

Get into nature, along Edmonton’s river valley and Mill Creek area. There is an extensive network of trails that are good for walking, biking, and cross-country skiing. You’ll forget you’re in a city.

For a taste of regional history, head to Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. It’s an easy campervan drive only 25 minutes east of Edmonton along Highway 16. There are 30-plus historic buildings showcasing the Ukrainian settlement in East Central Alberta. Highlights include three churches, a fully-functioning grain elevator, blacksmith shop and sod hut. Costumed workers play roles as Ukrainian settlers who retell stories as they go about the everyday events such as baking bread and gardening.

With three ski hills in the city, Edmonton is definitely the place for a motorhome snow trip. Snow Valley, Sunridge and Rabbit Hill offer ski runs for all levels and abilities, as well as terrain parks.
