The Age of Reliable Motorhome Broadband is Here

Fed up with spotty internet on the road? The days of struggling to connect while driving a motorhome rental around New Zealand could soon be over.

Almost everyone who has ever been on a road trip has struggled with wireless internet. Whether you’re working on the go, trying to make use of your Netflix subscription or just attempting to find out a bit more about an upcoming destination, staying connected has become extremely important. However, historically internet options while travelling in a motorhome - rental or owned - in New Zealand have been very limited. This looks to be changing in a big way with the recent announcement of a groundbreaking partnership between Wireless Nation and New Zealand Motor Caravan Association to bring NZMCA members the next level in mobile internet: NZMCA DATA.

NZMA CEO Bruce Lochore said this came in answer to their members’ need for the benefits of in-home broadband on the road. “That means no more restrictive data limits - but big data that provides members with a service that’s as fast and consistent as city broadband.” However, it soon became clear that existing solutions wouldn’t suffice, which is why NZMA went on to forge a partnership with Wireless Nation. Lochore said of NZMCA DATA, “We have been able to put together an offer that ticks all the boxes for our members in terms of speed, reliability, flexibility, volume of data and, of course, price.”

While for the moment this plan is only available to NZMCA members, the fact that a reliable high-speed internet plan now exists which specifically caters to the needs of motorhome travellers means that staying in touch while on the road is now a realistic prospect, and it may not be long before similar solutions are available for everyone. This is bound to make a huge difference to the way that many spend their holiday time - Bruce Lochore noted that the average NZMCA member spends about 75 days every year on the road, “However, until now the difficulty of keeping in touch with friends and family via the internet or using technology to stream entertainment on very restrictive mobile phone data plans has been limiting our members.”

Although it might take a little while before campervan hire models in NZ are kitted out with this kind of advanced wireless connectivity, there’s no denying the way has been opened for travellers to spend even more time exploring the hidden gems of New Zealand without sacrificing the ability to connect with others or enjoy the latest in online entertainment.

If you can’t wait for wireless technology to catch up and just want to get out on New Zealand’s roads as soon as possible (after all, there’s more than enough in this beautiful country to make you forget all about the virtual world) take a look at these itineraries perfect for those taking a motorhome rental around New Zealand. Major pick up locations include Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurch and Wellington.

It’s funny how motorhome memories stick with you. I can still recall a motorhome vacation my family took when I was five years old and how awesome I thought I was, tucked away in a loft bed above the cab. From revealing unique destinations to providing tips and tricks, it’s my mission to help others build great motorhome memories too.
