Gold Coast campervan hire – fun in the sun and surf

gold coast, motorhome rental, campervan hire

The Gold Coast is the playground of Australia. Known for its incredible beaches, perfect weather and exhillirating theme parks, it is an exciting trip for a motorhome rental. You can fly direct into Gold Coast airport or take a slight detour to Brisbane and pick up your campervan there.

Camper rental made easy on the Gold Coast

As one of Austalia’s most popular tourist destinations, there are many choices for Gold Coast campervan hire. View and compare local and international brands on Motorhome Republic. It’s easy: just fill out your itinerary details and let us do the rest. Our filtering system allows you to nail down the exact style or size of camper you are looking for during your Gold Coast holiday.

Queensland campervan road trips are unique. You can make your own itinerary as you go and your bed is always with you. Whether you’re sightseeing as part of a road trip along the East Coast or just want convenient accommodation, you’ll see two kinds of motorhomes on the roads. There are either basic campervans without a shower and toilet and larger, more self-contained motorhomes. Both are easy to drive.

Attractions on the Gold Coast

The beaches on the Gold Coast are pristine and golden, with the coastline stretching for 57km. It’s one of the best places to learn to surf with clean breaks in Burleigh Heads, Currumbin and Kirra.

Surfers Paradise is a cocktail of money, clubs, glitz and tans. People flock here for the hype and end up exhausted! But it’s always worth a couple of hours to explore the beach and have a go at surfing.

Broadbeach is a pristine beach only seven mins from Surfers. It has a European feel with some of the more expensive restaurants on the coast. Nobby’s Beach is another five minutes away and is far more relaxed - it’s a great place to base your motorhome holiday in the heart of the Gold Coast. Further south is Coolangatta, where the vibe is definitely laid-back.

You can’t come to the Gold Coast and ignore the theme parks. Here’s a quick rundown:

Sea World is a marine mammal park and oceanarium. Storm Coaster and Castaway Bay are the most popular rides, but the best thing about this place is getting up close to the dolphins, penguins and polar bears.

Enjoy a day out at Wet'n'Wild Water World – the Gold Coast's biggest water park.  It’s a great place to take the family in summer and is a day out they’ll never forget.

Dreamworld is Australia's biggest theme park, with five roller-coasters, more than 20 rides and a dozen other attractions. Just north-west of Gold Coast in Coomera, Dreamworld is a 45-minute drive from the airport.

Movie World is just five minutes from Dreamworld. Here you can meet your favourite stars and super heroes and experience rides like Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster.

If you’re all beached out and tried every ride, do not fear – there is still more to do on the coast. Head up to Sky Point in Q1 for a relaxing view of the whole coast, or head to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or David Fealy Wildlife Park and meet some true locals.

Between June and the end of October you can take a whale watching cruise to spot some of the 10,000 humpback whales heading between the Antarctic and warmer oceans.

Best in the world – Gold Coast nightlife and restaurants

For a Vegas-style nightclub, Love is the place to be for a truly attractive crowd and well-made drinks. Score yourself a VIP booth for bottle service, or hit the dance floor until the wee hours. Melbas is more low key, with friendly staff and popular music. They also do great specials on drinks throughout happy hour.

Avenue Restaruant and Saloon is a perfect night out. There are strawberry and mango daiquires, dancing and excellent food. A hidden gem on the Gold Coast is Allure on Currumbin. It’s a fine dining restaurant that makes any occasion special. The duck is to die for!

On Mermaid Beach, the French Le Café Gourmand delivers consistently great food. Breakfast here is a must. For something a little different try the Japanese Steak House or True Malaysia.

Camping and accommodation on the Gold Coast

Thunderbird Park is an amazing wildlife park stretching over 112 hectares. Here you can wake up in towering rainforests and fall asleep under star-studded skies. All caravan sites have their own rock-bordered firepits.

Tallebudgera Creek Tourist Park at the northern end of Palm Beach has been a family favourite for many years. Tucked on the picturesque Tallebudgera Creek, this park has everything you need for a perfect holiday base.

Nobby Beach Holiday Village caters for the whole family, with a swimming pool and patrolled surf beach a mere 200 metres from the resort.

Set in the midst of a beautiful natural reserve, South Stradbroke Island Campground is a uniquely peaceful retreat, yet still conveniently close to the Gold Coast and numerous beaches in the area. Unfortunately it’s not a place to take your motorhome, so you’d need a tent for these nights.

Eastern Australia – travel from the Gold Coast

There are some beautiful road trips from the Gold Coast if you’re ready for a change of scenery. Drive 90 minutes west following signage to Canungra through scenic hinterland to reach Lamington National Park. It is a rainforest retreat and home to birdlife and an abundance of wildlife. Take a bush walk up to the many waterfalls and learn more about Aboriginal history. You can even camp in the national park with your motorhome.

A skywalk through the Tambourine Rainforest leads you to crystal-clear rock pools and breathtaking displays of flora and fauna. Tambourine Mountain also has glow-worm caves, plenty of walking tracks and a township where you can give your credit card a workout.

Just a 15-minute drive from Currumbin Beach, Currumbin Valley Rock Pools is a fun day out for families or couples looking for a cute spot. Walk 50m upstream to a small waterfall tucked away from the main attraction. Drive up a few kilometres further and there is a great short walk along the creek.

A handy Australian motorhome guide

  • Make sure you pack mozzie repellant and lots of it.
  • Native animals like to visit camping spots and take the odd bit of food if left lying around, so make sure you clean up after yourself.
  • Be quick to book accommodation, as campsites are often booked out months in advance.
  • For tickets to theme parks, get combo deals. Otherwise one day could end up costing you more than your motorhome rental!
